CimData published a list of the top 10 reasons PLM Implementations fail. I will address a few of these that I have had to deal with.
Trying to do too much at once [scope creep]
Scope creep can kill any project. It is often difficult to get projects like these funded. When scope creep occurs, the timeline is extended and the cost of the project will go up. Nothing good comes from scope creep.
Lack of employee buy-in; cultural change management
It only takes one discontented voice to ruin a project. Often, management will think implementing PLM is a good idea but are still a little skeptical about the final outcome. A single disgruntled employee can easily sabotage a PLM implementation project.
Believing that PLM software is a panacea; unrealistic expectations
It doesn’t take long to discover that problems with any project can occur if someone isn’t managing expectations. I constantly review expectations to get the project well defined. Then, I make sure these expectations are successfully met.
Managing expectations is a communications skill. A big part of communications is active listening. It is important to make sure that you heard what you thought you heard. Your user community needs to feel that they have been listened to – they need to be heard. If you can communicate effectively, you would be surprised at how easy it is to have a successful implementation.
These big three reasons for failure can be easily overcome. Understand what they are and manage your project to address them early. The benefits of PLM are well worth the effort.
